Pompe Patients Frequently Consult Specialist Teams

Specialists who may be involved in the care of a Pompe patient may include:
Metabolic Consultant – A specialist consultant that will help explain the disease and monitor its progression at regular intervals for the rest of the persons life. They will also explain treatment options and monitor the progression of the condition.
Neurologist – A specialist in the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the brain and nervous system
Respiratory Consultants – Doctors in respiratory medicine diagnose and treat conditions affecting the respiratory (breathing) system, e.g. the nose, throat (pharynx), larynx, the windpipe (trachea), the lungs and the diaphragm.
Cardiologists – A heart specialist, usually a physician concerned with the minutiae of cardiac diagnosis and medical treatment.
Geneticists – A specialist that treats and counsel patients with hereditary conditions and researches inherited diseases.
Gastroenterologist – A specialist that covers disorders affecting the digestive system, stomach, bowels, liver and pancreas.
Physiotherapists – Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.
Occupational Therapists (OT) – OTs work with people of all ages and can look at all aspects of daily life in the home, school or workplace. They look at activities people find difficult and see if there’s another way to do it.
Speech and language therapists (SALT) – Speech and language therapy provides treatment, support and care for children and adults who have difficulties with communication, or with eating, drinking and swallowing.
